In 1897, and eight-year-old girl named Virginia O'Hanlon wrote to New York's
Sun with the question, "Is there a Santa Claus?"
An unsigned editorial appeared in
The Sun as a quick response. Printed September 21, 1897, this article has appeared "in part or whole in dozens of languages in books, movies, and other editorials, and on posters and stamps" (
Newseum). It has become one of the most reprinted newspaper editorials in history--in fact, newseum.org crowns it as the most reprinted newspaper editorial in history. Applauded for eloquent words and touching truth, it would do us all good to take the time to appreciate the answer
The Sun gave to little Virginia over a century ago.
