Sacred

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the 50 Week Challenge, please visit this post.

Sacred:
holy; entitled to reverence;
consecrated to God

No more sacred work exists in secular or holy writ than that of mother. There is no more noble work than that of a good and God-fearing mother.
--Ezra Taft Benson, To the Mothers in Zion

We sometimes overlook the importance of motherhood. Since a very young age, we (the young adults of today) have been taught to reach for two main objectives: go to college, and secure a career. We focus on the career tests, the salaries, the hours, the years of education, the job outlooks. We look at opportunities to get ahead, to be noticed, to stand out and to become someone, something. These are all wonderful things, truly, for both men and women to seek after and achieve. But in the rush of "getting ahead," take care to remember the sacred work of motherhood.

I think of my own mother and the influence that she has had on my life. Though we experienced some truly difficult times, she has been absolutely loving, caring, understanding, guiding, patient, and persevering through it all. Never once has her faith faltered. Always, she points me back to the Lord. She reminds me that, no matter what, I am in His hands. That things are going to work out.

My mother is supportive of me in everything. She has spent countless hours walking and running endless miles with me, always encouraging me to become my best self--whoever and whatever that may be. Sacrificing time and energy out of her own busy schedule, she has listened to my stories, guided me through my trials, and helped me toward my dreams.

Let us not forget the influence of mothers--past, present, and future. Always remember the sacred role that motherhood plays in our Father's plan. Motherhood is not a cop-out, it is not demeaning, it is not a lesser role than that of the father. Motherhood is a joy and a blessing. It is a life-long, even an eternal, responsibility. It is a sacred work. Take the time to recognize the efforts of your own mother and to thank her for all that she has done for you.

  2. Wow, it's pretty cool how the word of the week worked out so perfectly with Mother's Day. I love what you said about forgetting the importance of motherhood because something that works with such quiet power is easy to de-emphasize. Thanks for another fantastic 50 Word post Dania. You are so inspiring!
